How to Prepare for Your First Content Day

· 1 min read

The difference between a stressful shoot and a smooth one is almost never the camera. It is the week before it. Owners who treat a content day like an appointment they simply show up to tend to spend the first hour flustered; owners who prepare a few things in advance spend that same hour actually filming.

Start with purpose, not aesthetics. Decide what the content is for before you decide what it looks like. Are you introducing yourself to new customers? Explaining a service? Showing the behind-the-scenes of an event? Three clear uses beat thirty unused clips. Write those uses down — they become your shot list, and your shot list becomes a calm day.

Prepare your space the way you would for an important guest, because that is exactly what the camera is. Clear the surfaces that will be in frame, check that lights work, and find a window of time when phones and foot traffic are quiet. Natural light from a window, facing you, beats almost any lamp in the building.

For yourself: bring more than one outfit, keep patterns simple, and avoid logos that aren't yours. Most importantly, write down the three things you would want a customer to remember about your business — not a script, just three honest points. When the camera is on and your mind goes blank, those three points will carry you through every take.

Finally, release the idea of a single perfect take. Conversation-format filming — where someone asks you questions and you simply answer — produces warmer, more natural footage than memorized lines ever will. You have been talking about your business for years. A content day is just that same conversation, recorded.
